Painting Apprentice: What Is It and How to Become One

Why do you want to become a painter?

Maybe you think you have the skills, talents and calling. Or maybe you simply like the job of helping others transform their spaces with paint. Or is it the salary?

Whatever your reason is, do you know how to start in this career path you choose?

In the world of modern construction, budding painters need to get their feet wet before joining the ranks of the pros through an apprenticeship. Painting apprenticeships provide new painting contractors with a solid foundation in all aspects of painting, from materials handling and estimating jobs, to documentation and field experience.

Are you ready to take on the challenge of a painting apprentice? Read on to know more about becoming a painting apprentice.

What Does a Painting Apprentice Do?

Painter apprenticeship programs are offered in various trades, such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, construction and many others. Typically, the length of a painting apprentice program ranges from 6 to 12 months, depending on the trade. This also varies depending on the region where you intend to take the apprenticeship program.

Painting apprentices work a minimum of 35 hours per week during their program. They normally receive a salary that is lower than the average salary of a non-apprentice worker in the same trade.

A painting apprentice typically receives on-the-job training from their experienced painting mentors. Painting apprentice jobs include learning and executing painting processes and other crucial tasks under the supervision of an experienced artist. Prep work, followed by painting, is the main part of their work. Sanding, caulking, finishing and touch-ups are also included.

After completion of the program, painting apprentices will receive a certification of achievement. This is a basic level of recognition that shows that the apprentice has completed a certain number of hours of instruction and has been given a certain number of safety and health codes.

How Can an Apprentice Get an Official Painting Job?

Painting is typically a full-time job for painters unless they are self-employed or have a large number of regular customers. Some painters may also contract out painting work to other painters. A painter contractor might be responsible for hiring painters, scheduling painting days, making sure the painters are paid, resolving any disputes between painters, etc.
