Consumers need to be aware that painters and decorators undertaking domestic and strata works are required to be licensed by the NSW Office of Fair Trading. When engaging a painter and/or decorator, you should ask to see proof of their license and a Certificate of Currency for both their Worker’s Compensation and Public Liability Insurances. In addition to that, any works over $20,000 are required to have a Home Warranty Insurance Certificate provided by the contractor. Which Paint is best?

Paint is more than just a pretty face; it also performs the important job of protecting the structure beneath it. If maintenance is not kept up-to-date, you, the customer, could face peeling, blistering and cracking paint, maybe even rust and mould growth.

At the very first sign of any paint breakdown, it could already be overdue to call an expert. It is strongly recommended to repaint before problems are visible, and certainly within the lifetime cycles estimated by the manufacturer, or recommended by your painter/decorator.

For the best performance, use the best paint! The old adage ‘You get what you pay for’ applies to paint just as it does to other things in life. In most cases, buying the cheapest paint product is simply false economy.

What do I Tell the Painter?

It is up to you to inform your painter of your painting requirements, so it is important to agree on all job details and have them set down in writing before the work begins. Your painter should list every surface you require to be painted, as well as a list of colours you have chosen, with sample chips, if possible.

It will make it easier for the painter to give you an accurate quotation, which will allow you to compare with other quotes and give you a permanent record for the future. Once you have decided upon which Master Painter you will be using, you should then enter into a “Contract for Domestic Painting Works” as per the Home Building Act.

What Results Should I Expect?

Remember, it is very important to understand the various stages of the work to be completed. The basis of a good job is often determined at the preparation stage, so discuss these requirements with your painter. Manufacturers’ recommendations form the basis of the whole process, from application through to the final finish. However, you should also keep in mind the quality, or poor quality, of previous coatings and substrate.

A member of the Master Painters Association will submit a written quotation that clearly sets out all the points you agreed on, such as price, estimated job duration or completion date, preferred brand, progress payments, and terms and conditions

Your Safety

Old paint can often contain lead. This is particularly hazardous to children and pregnant mothers so if you are considering doing the work yourself, you should first check for its presence.

Many properties also contain asbestos and this will need to be dealt with by a professional. Always check before you commence working on the property yourself.
